What is Philanthropy? Film Screening Next Tuesday

You're invited!

Join us for a screening of the documentary film, What is Philanthropy?, from 6:00-8:00pm next Tuesday, November 3rd. The event will be held at the Loudermilk Center downtown and complete details may be found here.

What is Philanthropy? is a thought provoking documentary designed to help viewers understand the meaning of philanthropy and why giving is important. Philanthropy is portrayed in television, the movies and the media. Most of us have either participated in it or have benefited from it. It is all around and touches our lives somehow every day. But, in reality, what do we really know about this concept of giving?

What is Philanthropy? enhances our understanding of this concept through the perspectives of a variety of people from across the United States.  Subjects include actor Mike Farrell from M*A*S*H; Senator Charles Grassley; Nell Newman, President and co-founder of Newman’s Own Organics; Civil Rights Leader Dr. William G. Anderson; Evelyn Lauder from Estee’ Lauder Companies; and Alex Smith, quarterback of the Kansas City Chiefs, among many others.

The screening will be followed by remarks from panelists to include:

  • Dr. Salvatore Alaimo, Executive Producer of the film and Associate Professor, Grand Valley State University
  • Martin Lehfeldt, Past President, Southeastern Council of Foundations
  • Joy Webb, Founder, The Circle of Joy

The film's producer, Salvatore Alaimo, PhD, is an associate professor in the School of Public, Nonprofit, and Health Administration at Grand Valley State University (GVSU) a liberal arts university in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Dr. Alaimo was a resident of the Atlanta area from 1995 to 2008, during which time he earned his master’s degree in Urban Studies with a concentration in nonprofit management from Georgia State University.
